On this day of celebration and remembrance of the life and contributions of The Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. to advance the human condition, we focus on Dr. King's vision of the Beloved Community. The Beloved Community is one in which all people are committed to living in harmony and to taking the steps necessary to make that vision a reality. In the words of Dr. King, “Our goal is to create a beloved community, and this will require a qualitative change in our souls as well as a quantitative change in our lives.” Many dedicated individuals and organizations are committed to critical initiatives to address poverty, homelessness, income inequality, educational inequities, and other institutional barriers to creating the Beloved Community. Each of us can contribute to promoting harmony and interconnectedness in our communities with a simple step everyday: just say "hi" to your friends and neighbors. This act makes each individual feel seen, cared for, and included. Creating the Beloved Community takes us all.
